If you are new to astrology, you may be wondering what is the meaning of houses, also known as Bhavas, in astrology. But, in order to understand houses, you have to understand the meaning of astrology and horoscope first.

What is Astrology

The online dictionary defines astrology as following

the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world.

But, there is a small mistake. Celestial bodies such as planets, stars, etc have no influence on human life directly. But it has an indirect influence on us.

In astrology, the location of stars and planets are noted down to calculate time. In other words, time is denoted by the location of these planets and stars just like how we have hour hand and minute hand in our cloaks. 

When a certain planet come to a certain location, an event may or may not be triggered. In our normal life, we can relate this to an analog watch. When the clock ticks 1 ‘o’ clock, we will be into the action of eating, isn’t it? What triggered the action? was it the cloak or the time? 

What is a Horoscope 

A horoscope is an astrological map that denotes the relative position of the stars and planets during a birth. 

I think this definition is simple to understand. No explanation is needed here.

Now coming to our real question,

What are houses in astrology

Imagine this whole universe as a circle. Now, imagine the circle is divided into 12 equal parts. 

360/12= 30 degree

So, a house is an astrological representation of 1/12 part of the universe during a birth!. Simple mathematics, isn’t it?

As per the time of your birth, some planets will be positioned in some houses of your horoscope. In Vedic astrology, there are 9 planets namely Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu (North node of the moon), and Ketu (South Node of the moon). So, if you are looking into a Vedic Chart, it is okay to have some houses empty because there are 12 houses but only 9 planets. Sometimes, planets occupy less than 9 houses. Then also, there is nothing much to worry because it is better to have no planets in a house rather than having a malefic sitting there. 

In Sanskrit or Vedic astrology, Bhavas means houses in a horoscope.

Meaning of 12 houses in Astrology

Each house denotes something in Astrology. To be honest, there are ten and hundred meanings we can attribute to a single house. But, I am going to mention only a few here. 

1st house

Also known as Ascendant, Lagna and Thanu Bhava.

Denotes bodily appearance, character, early childhood, health and vitality,
personality, fame, longevity, Head.

2nd House

Also known as Dhanasthana.

Denotes money, family life, domestic harmony, food or diet, intellect, powers of speech and writing, jewelry, dress, mouth, nose, right eye.

3rd House

Also known as Parakramasthana.

Denotes brothers, younger siblings,·fine arts (music, dance, drama), personal interests, courage and adventure, skill with hands, short journeys, inquisitive mind, ambition, will, hands, arms, throat.

4th House

Also known as Suhrdasthana.

Indicates mother, happiness, contentment, property and real estate, formal
education, subconscious mind, chest, lungs, heart.

5th House

Also known as Sutasthana or Putrasathana.

Indicates children, love affairs, romance, creative intelligence, wisdom, poorvapunya (past life credit), stomach (sometimes heart).

6th House

Also known as Ripu or Rogasthana. (Roga means disease)

Indicates service, detail work, medicine, catering, pets, enemies, disease, effort and hard work, debts, navel, intestines.

People who are into regular jobs should have a strong 6th house. When the 6th house is stronger than the 7th house, it denotes that regular jobs will be suitable to native rather than business and vice versa.

7th House

Also known as Kama house or Kalatrasthana.

Indicates marriage partner, quality of married life, love and passion, social nature, business partnerships, below navel, kidneys, veins.

8th house

Also known as Mrtyusthana.

Denotes death, longevity, inheritance, mystical nature, psychic ability,
knowledge of psychology, delays, fears, misfortune reproductive systems, chronic illness.

9th House

Also called Bhagyasthana (House of fortune).

Indicates father, wisdom, guru, religion, philosophy, long journeys, law, teachers, higher education, bhaga or good fortune thighs and hips.

10th House

Also called Karmasthana.

Denotes career or vocation (also first house), status, power, house of action, achievement, good deeds, knees.

11th House

Also known as Ayasthana.

Denotes friends, groups, profits and gains, sisters and older siblings, goals, hopes, dreams, aspirations. legs and ankles, calves.

12th House

Also called Vyayasthana.

Indicates enlightenment, bed pleasures, sleep, expenditures, confusion, sorrow,
confinement, loss, seclusion, your next life, feet, left eye, hearing.
